Final Idea

So i still want to have dual perspective (two screens showing different scenes simultaneously) to try and use suspense to convey my sensory emotion: FEAR.

In the right hand screen the camera start black and slowly focus as it pans along a white wall, coming to a corner, slowly turning it and end up facing down a long hallway with an ominous door at the end of it. The camera continues to slowly move down the hallway approaching the door until it stops dead in front of the door.

The left hand screen starts black and shows a multitude of quick shots while the other scene is moving slowly down the hallway. Not sure of the exact order but ideas are:

  • flickering lights
  • use of chiaroscuro - over emphasise lights and darks
  • shadows moving along the walls
  • figures passing windows
  • subtle reflections in glass/mirrors
  • dust moving as it someone is walking past
  • foot shadows in the gap under the door
  • lightbulb swinging
  • doorhandle rattling
  • door swinging open and shut

So they are supposed to be the “scary images” in ones head as it is racing through possibilities, scaring itself as to what is at the end of the hallway/behind the door. Mixed in with this scary imagery I would like to have bizarre extreme close ups of parts of the body signalling someone becoming, tense/stressed/fearful

e.g

  • XCU of the spot in between ones eyebrows, tensing
  • XCU of a throat swallowing or beating like a pulse in the throat
  • XCU of a restless eye
  • XCU of a mouth, agape, tense
  • XCU of a chest rising an falling as ones breath quickens
  • XCU of goosebumps
  • random textures - floors/walls etc
  • Hands and feet scrunching up/shaking

So the left frame is a montage of all these elements contributing to the fear in your mind. The editing techniques I intend to use are

  • rapid cutting
  • increase in cut speed as the other frame gets closer and closer to the door
  • racking focus so its confusing as to what you’re supposed to focus on and thus disorientate the viewer
  • blurred/abstract details
  • jittery effect making image shake or stretch
  • mixing sped up and slowed down footage
  • wobbly camera at some points
  • making particular parts of the image blurred and others not
  • fractal noise
  • if I use sound - white noise? high pitched frequency. mis-match footsteps and staticy noise to confuse the viewere as to which frame they should be focusing on - further disorientation

I then want to have both frames fix on the door before the climax/anti-climax and the end shot to be..

  • Flash and then black
  • Black or white
  • A reflection in a mirror or just a mirror
  • The view of the ocean
  • Another door

Not sure how I want to end it - not make it too much of a narrative. The important part is the suspense building so concentrate on that.

All is left to do is start shooting and then ill have something to play with!
